Satisfying My Meat Craving @ The Vieux-Port Steakhouse

A few weeks ago, I felt the need... the need for meat. It was a hunger that could be satisfied with fish, chicken, any form of pork not even bacon. It would only be cured by a good piece of red meat steak. Instead of going to the grocery store and pick up something for dinner as usual, we deiced to head out to town to try a new restaurant on the weekend. We settled for the Vieux-Port Steakhouse as an experiment. I hoped that it lived up to its name of a steakhouse. I really did not want to suffer the itch for another day. And thank god, I didn't.

The restaurant was very busy that night. I thought we weren't going to get a seat. Unbeknown to us, it had 2 floors and is VERY spacious. It seems to be a great place to entertain a large crowd. We followed our hostess to a small table on the second floor. She was back in a few minutes to fill our water glasses and took our wine order. I would make a note of it but I really can't recall what I ordered and how it was. Remembering or noting down the wines is something that I need to work on. Memory of food comes much easier to me, almost photographic. It is perhaps a weird obsessive disorder.

Travelling Argentina: Food Edition - Part 3

The last little bit of the special Argentina food experience ended at the "end of the world", Ushuaia. Near the port of Ushuaia is a restaurant by the name of "Gustino". The food is good (great if you have been craving something that's not red meat) with interesting plating. It has wonderful ambiance looking over the port of Ushuaia.

We had chicken kabobs with what I believe to be avocado mayo as our appetizer, pan fried fish with mashed potato and red pepper sauce as the main course. As with other parts in Argentina, the protein parts of the meal were prepared in a simple way and very well cooked. The meal was finished with an apple pie that could have easily been better.

If you want to return to a diet more similar to the ones back at home, this is the place to be.

Travelling Argentina: Food Edition - Part 2

The Patagonia covers a large area of Argentina. It is a flat dessert-ish land covered in short shrubs as far the eyes can see. (Well, this is true until you get close to the Chile-Argentina boarder.) It has it's charm and little cute animals running around, nandous, maras, guanacos, and most importantly the corderos. Corderos are cute fluffy Patagonian sheep raised for wool and meat. It is the most common kind of meat consumed in Patagonia. And boy, is it delicious!

Travelling Argentina: Food Edition - Part 1

Argentina: meat, lots of meat. Chile: seafood heaven. Obviously, there are some great beer, wine, and hard liqueur. We visited quite a few different parts of Argentina in our 2 and a half week trip; Bueno Aires, Puerto Madryn, El Calafate, Ushuaia, Iguazu, and Mendoza. Here's a map to give a general idea of where we've been.

Sushi Yasuda, A Traditional Sushi Heaven (NYC)

Since I have moved to the east coast, away from the beautiful Vancouver, I have rarely gotten a good piece of fish Japanese style. Thanks to a trip to NYC and a friend who also loves a sushi, I was introduced to Sushi Yasuda. It's one amazing sushi shop. All the positive reviews that you are sure to come across when googling this restaurant are true. It has the freshest fish and expert chefs to prepare them. It is a quiet restaurant though. Not recommended for a rowdy crowd.

The menu price might surprise a few people. Each piece of sushi/sashimi range from 4-8 dollars. It's quite pricey. Your dinner could easily end up to be 100+. However, they do have a fixed price menu for 25 dollar per person that is complete with soup and dessert. It's a reasonable menu where you are required to select your fish from a limited list. These fish are quite tasty and they let you know which are the freshest everyday.

Korean Fusion of the "8st Kitchen" (NYC)

Where to go on a brisk fall Friday night with a few friends? My boyfriend and I were invited to the 8st Kitchen for such a night. It's the home to Korean fusion cuisine on the west side of NYC. The 8st Kitchen has a nice modern decor with a wall of stacked firewood which will sure impress. It's filled with large black tables and benches allowing for food sharing and good conversations. For people who would like to come for a bite with a friend or alone, there are a few bar seats available as well. It's best to make a reservation the day before if you are expecting company as there's rarely an empty seat in the house.
